Non-response

Non-response or No answer is a term used for possible types of survey interview drop out or failure.

Non-response means:

  1. a person could not or did not want to participate in the survey due to certain reasons (e.g. lack of time, lacking interest, not accessible during the field phase) and did not answer the questionnaire at all or
  2. a person participates in the survey but does not answer certain questions from the questionnaire.

The second aspect often occurs with written questionnaires or online surveys. If the interviews are conducted by telephone or face-to-face the interviewer has the opportunity to probe and encourage the participant to answer all interview questions.
This is one of the reasons why FBInnovation prefers conducting telephone interviews.
